TRANSMISSION REPLACING AND TROUBLESHOOTING,INSPECTING TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS,TRANSMISSION FAILURES, OD WARNING LIGHT,

Automatic transmission and manual transmission repairs and understanding

First of all i will say,if you are confirmed, that failure is related to yours cars transmission, then its suggested to get the transmission inspected and repaired from proper transmission repair shop technician.

On most of transmission failure issue, the transmission is rebuilt and or replaced.

Vehicle transmission assembly and its components are very costly and repairing/replacing transmission is not a easy job.
It needs proper car experience knowledge, otherwise its not possible for a newbie to proceed towards transmission repairing task.

Yes,inspecting minor issues like transmission fluid leaking or transmission fluid filling, transmission gear slipping, transmission not going in reverse .............. the inspecting thing is possible.

One thing i will say in case of transmission failures.Never let the minor issues settle down, these minor trans problem will result in major engine and transmission rebuilt requirements.

Always service your vehicle on time.Regularly inspect the fluids and oils which your vehicle required. If its low, refill the fluids and oil.

Always use high quality branded oil. Don't use non-branded local auto oil and trans fluids.
Never over fill the fluid.

Transmission components inspection starts from bell housing, trans fluid, trans filter, transmission shift gears, .........

Mostly when transmission starts failing you notice problems like transmission gears slipping, these is due to transmission fluid leaking.

Transmission will not go in reverse or may be it will not go in any gear.Transmission will not shift,

These all problems are related to low transmission fluid or clogged transmission fluid filter.
Sometime the fluid level is correct, but the transmission filter is clogged and that blocks the fluid to enter the transmission system. On these case the filter needs to be replaced.
Many a times a customer thinks its major transmission failure and lasdt fix is simple tranmission filter replacing and all gets o normal.

so always go with inspecting basics before directly getting into costly transmission replacing option.

WORKING THEORY OF TRANSMISSION:----

It works by simple procedure.Transmission along with transfer case. Both these components controls the shifting and operation of gears. Both transfer case and transmission transfer engine combustion energy to the rear wheels. These is done via series or adjusted gears.
the procedure is called gear shift.
To supply the required fluid to shift the gears smoothly in reverse/ forward direction the torque converter serves as a fluid coupling device between the engine and transmission.

On old cars you have to understand transmission issues by driving problems.
But you are not cen-percent confirmed that its actual transmission problem, till its inspected by technicaian.

But on latest new cars there are warning lights on dash indicator, these lights come up on dash,so these lets you know that transmission is causing the problem.

The check engine light, Overdrive( OD) light on dash.

There are obd scanner available to scan cars engine module and transmission control module. It provides you the error code, which tells you what part of transmission is causing problem.
These saves your lots of time and energy.

Car makes grinding rattling noise while driving,on such cases problem is transmission.

But you shift the lever to neutral and see if that noise is coming if yes transmission needs inspection. But if noise only in gears and not in neutral mode then problem is torque converter.the torque converter needle bearings may be worn, causing excessive movement and misalignment in the parts.

low fluid levels, failure of the internal clutch or band, and broken vacuum lines will cause transmission gear slipping issues while driving.

Vehicle shuddering and stalling while quick emergency stop is caused due to bad lockup solenoid, a shorted solenoid or a sticking lockup valve.

Always following these basics will help you to keep your vehicle in good condition and free from transmission problems:-------

BUT STILL IF YOU NEED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REMOVE REPLACE TRANSMISSION.

I HAVE FEW VERY GOOD HELPLINKS FOR VARIOUS CAR BRAND MODELS.

Yes the engine has to be out; it’s not a easy task to replace transmission. You will required professional tools and wrench/ratchets.
Also its very time consuming.

Transmission fluid leak, transmission gears slip,

Transmission problem, inspecting transmission fluid leak, why transmission gears are slipping,Transmission system leaks and gear slips while starting and driving.

Yes you notice such problem with car transmission many a times.

Many-a-times transmission repair issues are very costly.

So if you just notice minor issue related to transmission, don't ignore it.Ignorance is waiting for costly tranny repairs.

How you know transmission fluid is leaking.
Properly see the fluid color, its pinking red tinty and its very stick and oily kind of liquid.

Mostly it leaks from under the car.

Power steering fluid also looks very much similar. So if you notice the leak, just get it inspected by local tech about what exact fluid is leaking.

Due to fluid getting low,the transmission system will cause grinding and rattling noise. These noises will be heard from under the vehicle.

Also if you notice squealing noise while shifting ,its indication that transmission fluid is either low or its leaking.

Due to transmission fluid leaking,it also causes tranny gears to slip.

On these trans gear slip issue the motor will accelerate high but your vehicle will not give you that required speed as you accelerate.

Also you notice car shuddering and a delay in the car going into gear. Delay starting.
These symptoms are just the start up transmission failures. So dont ignore these indications.
Because major possibility after these is transmission not going in reverse or transmission will not shift out of park mode.

And at last transmission failures.

So transmission fluid is very important liquid. Its used to lubricate complete transmission assembly part. Its a special liquid made for your transmission. So don't use non-branded or non-trusted transmission fluid to your vehicle.A thick or thin fluid then original fluid, which your car requires can cause transmission failure issues.

A symptoms of transmission fluid leak or low trans fluid on your vehicle is engine overheating.
Do you notice vehicle getting overheat in few miles of driving, then its trans fluid issue.Yes there are many other possibilities for vehicle overheating, but low transmission fluid is also one reason.

Transmission fluid leaks due to many reasons.Poor /rough driving habits. Transmission seals getting old then worn out and cracked cause fluid leak.

If the fluid leak is minor, there is stop leak solution available at local autoparts store which you can apply on seal to seal the fluid leak. But in case of  major leak you will have to take the car to a workshop to fix the problem.

Sometimes the transmission leaks after getting its fluid changed. These is many a times due to overfill of trans fluid in the fluid chamber.
So always fill the trans fluid to its required level. Don't overflow it,thinking it will last long.It will leak and thse causes gear slip and finally no reverse and at last engine failure.

NO REVERSE ON TRANSMISSION

Transmission will not go in reverse, Transmission will shift in drive but no reverse

One of the following reason mentioned below is possible for these problem:----

No Reverse

  • Transmission  fluid level is got low.
If the fluid is low then refill the fluid to its required level.

  • Improper fluid refilled.
Always fill correct tranny fluid. If wrong fluid is filled then it can cause gear shift issues.

  • The shift cable for Transmission is broken or misaligned.
Inspect the condition of shift cable,if its got misaligned then realign it .If the cable is worn out or broken then replace the shift cable.

  • Band/clutch application pressure is very low.
Verify the clutch band condition if it seems worn out then it will not create required pressure.
  • Transmission Fluid filter is clogged or got worn out.
Verify the condition of transmission fluid filter. If the filter is very dirty and very old then its suggested to replace the filter. If the filter is very dirty but just newly replaced then just get the filter cleaned.
  • Faulty assembly gaskets or gasket got loose.
Inspect the main assembly gasket conditions,if the gasket bolts are out of its torque specs then refit the bolt and it will help.If gasket is got worn out then it has to be replaced.

  • The separator plate damaged.
Inspect condition of separator plate if its slipped from its actual position then readjust to its actual place. If the plate is broken/damaged then it has to be replaced.
  • Transmission Pump assembly bolts out of specifications.
Inspect the pump assembly condition for transmission. Also get the transmission pump pressure tested. If the pressure is low or leaking then pump has to be replaced.

  • Reverse clutch issue.
Inspect the condition of clutch,if its damaged or leaking then clutch has to be replaced.
  • Direct/reverse servo piston seal cut/leaking.
Confirm that piston seal is not letting the pressure loose. If the seal is worn or loose then it has to be replaced.

  • Faulty TCC( Transfer case control) Solenoid.
TCC solenoid needs to be replaced.

  • Issue with rear or front valve body.

Valve body got cracked or leaking.

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the tranny fluid checked. If it’s low, then such problems occurs.
